News : New Memoryhole story : Reinventing Big Brother

Date Sunday, 8 June,2003
Author Maros Kollar
Outline A couple of days ago a new story has been added to the Memoryhole.

This story, written by John Bromfield, examines the proposition that the telescreens in 1984 would be impractical because the government would be responsible for their manufacture and maintenance - the assumption being most would be broken most of the time! Maybe not...

The larger question raised is, how "efficient" do we really want the government to be?

This question is particularly interesting if regarded in a connection with the current GATS negotiations, which receive very little public attention, although the outcome of these negotiations will have a strong impact on our lives.

The whole story
